History of the Hohlebach mill

The Hohlebachmühle is one of the mills whose long history is closely linked to the town of Homberg (Efze) is linked. The mills were already of crucial importance for the food supply in the Middle Ages. At that time, if an outlaw (a person classified as a criminal) received permission from the respective sovereign, this outlaw was allowed to use the Homberger mills as a place of refuge. Originally, places like this were under the protection of the landlord, which meant that lansquenets were not allowed to plunder there – but this was extremely difficult during the prevailing wars.

Until the 14th century, the privilege of founding new mills only went to the Landgraviate, because only they had the right to give mills as a “reward” to worthy people. In the course of history, however, the rights of the landgrave passed and were inherited. The Hohlebachmühle, however, was an exception among the various Homberg mills, as it remained the property of the landgrave

The operation

In the early years of the century the mill was taken over by the Neidel family who managed to keep it in operation until the 1980’s. But after the mill, which at the time as Neidel mill was known to have been shut down, it fell into disrepair more and more. Although the Hohlebachmühle was exposed to decay, it nevertheless offered its visitors the image of a picturesque, almost forgotten place .

The dreamlike mill - today

Today, the Hohlebachmühle , which was first mentioned in a document in 1415, is the oldest mill in the district of Homberg. If you currently walk the beautiful path along the Efze to the mill, you will always be under the spell of this magical fairytale place pulled. It is also possible to use the short footpath hidden in the tall trees to immerse yourself directly in the world of the old mill.

After the restoration and renovation in recent years, the Hohlebachmühle shines in all its beauty again and is an insider tip for fans of historical buildings. The Hohlebach Mühle is the only historic water mill in the Homberg region that faithfully rebuilt became. As a Hombach sight, Mühle shows its visitors a piece authentic story, such as a complete grind. With their scenic surroundings the historic Hohlebachmühle is not only of interest to historians – located on the outskirts of Homberg (Efze), the watermill also offers a great, unique backdrop for excursions, celebrations or weddings and, with its idyllic nature, also invites those who long for peace and quiet to come quiet linger.
